Keys to Successful Time Management
“Self-knowledge and goals: In order to manage your time successfully, having an awareness of what your goals are will assist you in prioritizing your activities.
Developing and maintaining a personal, flexible schedule: Time management provides you with the opportunity to create a schedule that works for you, not for others. This personal attention gives you the flexibility to include the things that are most important to you.
How to Study
- Study in chunks: 20-50 minute time periods followed by a brief break (5-10 minutes) is the most effective way to study.
- Use daylight hours: An hour of studying during the day is worth two at night! Do the work that requires the most concentration (typically reading) earliest in the day.
- Rank your classes and be sure to spend time on your most challenging class every day and early in the day.
- Study actively: Ask yourself questions, review your notes regularly, discuss key concepts with peers.”

Communicating with Your Teachers and Setting up Conferences
When?
- You are still unclear about a concept or skill that you are supposed to have mastered.
- You receive a grade on a test or assignment that is truly unexpected or you do not understand why you received a particular grade.
- You know ahead of time that you are going to miss a class or a major assignment.
- You have questions about the homework or an assignment.
- You are either making a P or below in a class or your grade is considerably lower than it has been in the past, and you want to discover why and how to remedy the situation.
- Before an upcoming test or exam if you have questions or concerns.
- You want to have your teacher look at some preliminary work or a draft of a paper before it is due.
- You know ahead of time that you need an extension on a paper or assignment.
How?
- Obviously, it is best to talk to your teacher in person, but if you can't find them, send them an email:
- The email address formula is simple for all St. Stephen’s teachers:
firstinitiallastname@sstx.org
i.e. jhuth@sstx.org
- You can find your teacher’s first initial by looking in the school directory, which is where you can also find their home phone numbers if there is an emergency.
