HINT: - read about your topic (given below) in Tindall -- for a sketch. (check the INDEX for pages)
IMPORTANT: use ONLY the following sources.
1.) TINDALL
2.) Retrieving the American Past.
3.) ONE internet source - it MUST BE approved in advance by the teacher.
SUGGESTIONS about how to proceed:
1. Be sure that the thesis paragraph consists of TWO main parts:
a. the assertion – This is your thesis, based on the reading you have done. It is your best interpretive insight into the material you have studied.
b. the "map" – an outline of the argument of the paper. It should give the reader a clear idea of what the topics treated in the support paragraph and their relation to the theses.
NOTE: Each one of these TOPIC SENTENCES should be in a complete sentence (if it’s important enough to stand alone it should be in a separate sentence.)
2. SUPPORTING PARAGRAPHS:
- these paragraphs should follow in the order established in the THESIS PARAGRAPH.
- if the thesis says "I'll prove it by talking about A & B & C, then the supporting paragraphs should be in that order (A & B & C).
3. about QUOTES:
- First of all ( IMPORTANT HINT): DO NOT USE LONG QUOTES - frankly they're boring.
- The rare long quote must be INDENTED and single spaced (if it's longer than a line).
- PARAPHRASE: Most of the time, put things in YOUR OWN WORDS.
4. CITATIONS? - Important: there should be at least 3 or more to a paragraph. They are your evidence, and they show me that you have done research.
- use the short form: (e.g. “Smith 45”) IMPORTANT: these need to be accurate. I will check them.
5. LIST OF SOURCES (a bibliography -it's REQUIRED.). There are good programs for doing these in the library and the librarians can help you. Do not leave this till the last!
6. Deciding what to include: Some hints about content
- Do not rely on one source only. Consult and use them all.
- The best papers cope with differences of opinion.
- Do not write a summary of the documents. The idea is to use the information in the documents to prove YOUR points.
7. FINAL Preparation:
- Proofread carefully. (It's important practice for the Spring paper.)
- Even with a spellchecker, this takes some time.
- And if you use a spell checker - remember that it won't find all the errors.
- The paper must be typed so that it can be submitted to TURNITIN.com.
- Include the bibliography when you send it in.
