The Rules

1. When class begins, all students will be in their seats with all required materials ready for immediate use (including paper, writing implement, text, etc.). Any student lacking any required material at such time will be counted as tardy regardless of his or her time of arrival.

2. Homework will be checked at the beginning of each class. Students will not receive any academic penalty the first two times that they fail to do their homework. After that, each failure to complete a homework assignment will result in a deduction of one (1) point from the trimester grade, up to a maximum of 15 points.

3. Students are responsible for being aware of and arranging to make up any graded assignment missed due to absence. Any such assignment missed due to an unexcused absence will receive a grade of zero. Students must make up assignments within 48 hours of their return to school; assignments not made up within that time will receive a grade of zero.

4. Everyone in my classroom, including myself, will treat everyone else in the class with respect at all times. As instructor, I will work hard and will strive to maintain a fun and open atmosphere in which all students can learn to the best of their ability. I expect my students to do the same; conduct which interferes with a classmate's ability to learn will not be tolerated.

5. Students will comply with the Dress Code.

6. Students will not possess gum, food, or beverages in class.

7. All electronic devices must be turned off and stowed away during class.

8. Dishonesty of any kind will not be tolerated. Any case of academic dishonesty will result in a grade of zero on the assignment(s) concerned as well as additional disciplinary action.

9. Marking period grades will be determined as follows:

Tests: 50%
Quizzes: 35%
Homework and class participation: 15%

Fall and spring trimester grades will be determined as follows:

[(Marking period grade) x 2/3] + [(Final exam grade) x 1/3] = Final trimester grade

10. Because foreign languages are cumulative in nature and require a solid foundation at each level for continued progress, passing a given level does not necessarily mean being ready to manage the challenges of the next level successfully. Therefore, in the Foreign Language Department, any student who receives a grade of P-, P, or P+ at the end of the year will be evaluated to determine if s/he is ready to advance to the next level. The Evaluation Committee that will determine the student’s readiness will consist of the current teacher, the prospective teacher, the student’s advisor, and the department chair. The recommendations made by the Evaluation Committee will be final.
