Most characters in stories or movies can be categorized as either static or dynamic:

Static characters serve a purpose in the story, but they don't really change or evolve; they stay pretty much the same throughout the story.

Dynamic characters are characters who do change or evolve as the story develops. At the end of the story they are different than they were at the beginning. Any protagonist or main character is, by nature, dynamic, and one of our jobs as literary critics is to trace their development throughout the story. Who is he at the beginning? Who is he at the end? How does he change? Why does he change? What contributes to this change? And, remember, a character's evolution is not always positive.

In your efforts to analyze a character, pay attention to the following elements:

What the character says

What the character thinks

What the character does

How the character is described (mannerisms, speech patterns, attitudes, moods)

The reactions of other characters to the character you are analyzing

The character's clothing and personal possessions
