Note: there will always be an assignment made on days when class does not meet. You are responsible for homework on the online course calendar posted up to 4 PM the day before the homework is due.

tu 8/30/11 (A one hour) WELCOME TO LATIN I! Pronunciation of classical Latin with long and short vowels. Give directions to the online course calendar. A word about the two textbooks we will be using this year.

Assign: practice pronunciation of the alphabet by reading the key words out loud a few times; read short essays "Caecilius," "Metella," and "The Roman House" pp.10-16 in your red Unit I text.

wed 8/31 (B) See above assignment.

th 9/1 (C one hour) In class: finish pronunciation of the Roman alphabet. Explore the layout of your Unit I textbook. Read Stage 1 CAECILIUS, Model Sentences 2f., CERBERUS 7.

Assign: practice your pronunciation by rereading Model Sentences out loud to yourself. Finish reading CERBERUS 7 on your own; memorize the meaning of the words in the Stage 1 Checklist 18. Use them to practice your pronunciation out loud, and mind the difference between long and short vowels.

fri 9/2 (D ) In class: demonstrate technique of carding Latin vocabulary (including genders); read “About the Language” - word-order with and without EST 8. Distribute Latin I Course Information Sheets if time.
Assign: memorize carded Checklist Vocabulary 18 and bring to next class.

Assign: study checklist vocabulary, read the "About the Language" note on Sentences with and without EST 8 in Stage 1.

mon 9/5 (E) In class: introduction to Stage 2 - IN VILLA. Read and discuss the Model Sentences 20-23 plus MERCATOR 24.
Assign: read the next story in Stage 2 - IN TRICLINIO 25. Work out what is happening; it is not necessary to write out a translation. The important thing is to practice your pronunciation by reading the story out loud at least twice.

tu 9/6 (F) one hour CATCH-UP DAY. If time, start Wednesday's material.

Assign: memorize all checklist vocabulary, including Stages 1, 2.

wed 9/7 (G) In class: card Stage 3 checklist vocabulary 50. Start Stage 3 - NEGOTIUM: read and discuss VENALICIUS 40.

Assign: be ready for Stage 1 checklist vocabulary quiz. You need learn only the English meanings for the dozen or so words in the list on p. 18. Remember: each checklist quiz counts equal to two homeworks.

th 9/8 (A one hour) Stage 1 checklist vocabulary quiz

In class: read cultural essay "Town of Pompeii" 43, then discuss Noun Declensions, the target grammar topic of Stage 3, drilling the new sentence types at board.

Assign: study for Stage 1 and 2 cumulative checklist vocabulary quiz, also memorizing both noun forms of the Stage 2 checklist vocabulary list. (I did not ask you to do this in Stage 1, but from now on it is necessary. You do not need to worry about the second verb form yet.)

fri 9/9 (B) In class: distribute REVIEW packet and start reviewing material from Stages 1-3 in preparation for test next week over Stages 1-3.

Assign: study for Stage 1 and 2 cumulative checklist vocabulary quiz next class, this time memorizing both noun forms of the Stage 2 checklist vocabulary list. (I did not ask you to do this in Stage 1, but from now on it is necessary. Don't concern yourself with the second verb form yet.)
