NOTE: you are responsible for assignment changes made to the online course calendar by 4 PM of the day before work is due.

tu 8/25 In class: review the importance of knowing the principal parts of checklist verbs. There will be no checklist vocabulary quizzes this year, but you are responsible for all checklist material on tests.

Assign: fill in the alpha 4 verb synopsis down to the subjunctive mood forms, and be ready to show in class tomorrow.

wed 8/26 (B) In class: check REVIEW PACKET and fill out the subjunctive forms for all four tenses (imperfect, pluperfect, present, and perfect)

fri 8/28 (D) (one hour) Noun Declensional double quiz . Check participle HW.

In class: before leaving the indicative verbs behind, write in legible English the translation of each first person singular verb forms. (You could do all, but it is not required.)

As you know, participles are a big deal in Latin. There are 5 participles in Latin. We'll begin today's review by making up few sentences in English that would need to be translated with a participle in Latin.

mon 8/31 (E) In class: finish up the verb conjugations, active and passive voice, indicative and subjunctive mood; review the subjunctive uses.

Assign: memorize the table of information on participles, review packet alpha 5 (oblongs sheet). Write out the 2 participial review pages, alpha 6 (material of Stage 28). Write out a translation of the phrases on page alpha 6, #'s 1-20, with the exception of #10. These are all perfect passive participles, either active or passive. I have marked with an asterisk participles that are perfect active.

A brief answer is apt to incur a low mark; and I will be taking this one up. Read essay "Latin Poetry" 166f.

Assign: optional MAKEUP noun declensions double quiz tomorrow! (It will not wipe out your first effort, but it can sure mitigate things if you bombed the first time.) Finish writing out page alpha 8 in English, study alpha 9.

In a well-organized written exercise, discuss the nature of the day's activities, the effects they had on Catullus, and the relationship between the two friends."

PLEASE TYPE if at all possible and definitely DOUBLE-SPACE. Remember to incorporate the specific suggestions for improvement that I made to each of you on the last writing assignment. Aim to write not much less and certainly not much more than 300 words. (I won't even read past the 350-word mark; use restraint.)

In class: discuss the various structural divisions offered for Poem 50 by all members of the class. Using your written exercises and structure work, as a class "brainstorm" the SWIMTAG of Poem 50. tu 4/20 (F) In class: continue to discuss the various structural divisions offered for Poem 50 by all members of the class. Using your written exercises and structure work, as a class "brainstorm" the SWIMTAG of Poem 50. You are after raw data that might relate to the key words in the question.. Emphatically not wanted is any fancy "fine writing" stuff. Again, I ask that nobody mock what we are doing, or mock another person's contributions.

Assign: using your new marginal annotations--it's OK, even expected, that you "borrow" one another's insights--take your writing exercise through a second draft, making all the additions (and deletions) you want, but strictly observing the same length requirement as before. Remember to be informative and dull! (I won't even read past the 350-word mark; use restraint.)

CAUTION: do not collaborate in any way on the actual write-up. That would be academic dishonesty (collusion). Detected, it results in a zero for all involved.

The assignment is short because the word order is "interesting"--there are several difficult noun-adjective splits to deal with. The poem describes one of those Roman-boy-with-Greek-girl situations.
