NOTE: students are responsible for assignment changes made by 4 PM of the day before work is due. There will always be an F-day assignment though class does not meet. Long periods: C-, G-days.

tu 8/30 (A) In class: revisit the importance of knowing the principal parts of checklist verbs. There will be no checklist vocabulary quizzes this year, but you are responsible for all checklist material on tests. Begin review of "The Basics" from the review sheet, CASE and CASE USES (nominative, genitive, dative, some of the accusative uses from the grammar sequence of the CLC). You recall we got through Stage 42 last May.

Assign: fill in the alpha 4 verb synopsis down to the subjunctive mood forms, and be ready to show in class tomorrow. Don't spend more than a half hour on this.

wed 8/31 (B) In class: check REVIEW PACKET and continue with CASE and CASE USES (more genitive, more accusative).

Assign: fill out the subjunctive forms for all four tenses (imperfect, pluperfect, present, and perfect) and memorize. Spend thirty minutes re-memorizing the verb forms you have been copying with such labor.

th 9/1 (C one hour) Note that there is a Friday assignment though class does not meet that day. There is usually an assignment on such days.

In class: continue with CASE and CASE USES (the ablative). Focus on review of the ablative absolute.

Assign: be ready to take a double quiz over all the Noun Declensional endings next week.

fri 9/2 (D) Review uses of the subjunctive mood.

Assign: re-memorize the two adjective declensions on p 296 of your Unit IV text. Be ready for the noun-declensional double quiz next class!

In class: start STAGE 43 UNIVIRA - MATRONA EPHESIA I 172. Explore the passage, noting areas of difficulty with grammar.

Assign: with redoubled attention to grammar (handout page I.D.'s in ME I) and vocabulary, answer Stage 43 ME I comprehension questions; card Stage 43 checklist vocabulary 190 and be ready to show both next class

tu 9/6 (F) Assign: check your performance on the ME I comprehension handout. There are going to be a couple of bits that you may not be able to figure out--that's normal.

In class: continue ME I, translation of the "gnarly" bits.

Assign: work on class grammar handout for ME I - "Work on" means that you should be able to identify by a very brief quote each construction mentioned on the sheet and translate that brief quote accordingly.

Assign:175-176 with ME II. Write out ME II.1-12 and write in the I.D.'s of subjunctive constructions on the ME II sheet created for that purpose in the Stage 43 packet.

Assign: write out a translation of TURIA III 181-182. Spend an honest 45 minutes on this difficult passage, and that will be sufficient.

wed 9/21 (C) In class: work out TURIA III translation, applying "Attitudes for Reading Latin" guidelines.

Assign: read AL II - More about Indirect Speech 183 and work some exercises P&L 184.

th 9/22 (D) In class: finish TURIA III translation check and grade. Discuss AL 183 note--the priorities. Distribute Stage 43 review packet.

Assign: from review packet distributed at the beginning of the stage, write out ME II pages 6-7.List the uses in Latin briefly but completely, then translate. Don't give complete sentences.

fri 9/23 (E) REVIEW DAY 1. The most challenging parts of the Stage 43 Test will be the indirect statement and the conditionals (IF/THEN) about the language note material, and that is what we will focus on, pp. 332D and 335-6D. Distribute Stage 43 test breakdown sheet.

Assign: write out 332D.1-10 but especially #'s 5-9, and 335-6D.2-5, 7-9. This is a grammar-heavy test.

mon 9/26 (F) Assign: see above; be sure also to read the cultural essay material, and know the checklist vocabulary of Stage 43.

tu 9/27 (G one hour) REVIEW DAY 2. Be ready for Stage 43 Test next class.

Assign: write out a chunking translation of Cicero I 234. Triple-space. Of course, you are encouraged to type, but you may use long-hand. This homework, and all subsequent, will be taken up for a grade. The textbook gives you Cicero's PRO CAELIO, section 13. That is the reference you will need to find it in nodictionaries.com. Using cambridgescp.com, you don't have that problem; but you also don't have some advantages the alternative site offers. Try them both.

th 12/1 (A) Check HW. Take up Cicero I 234 for a grade. Every Cicero passage will be read and translated, then taken up and graded. I need to be able to tell your class corrections from your own work. Please draw a horizontal line under which you write class corrections, or put them on a separate sheet altogether.

With this in mind, consider carefully the scene in verses 142-146 and discuss how it may be construed, at least on one level, as a kind of magical rite." Please type, and it would be nice if we could access your essay for projection on the classroom screen.

wed 4/4 (B) Assign: on using the key-words and the marginal annotations you made in class, using SWIMTAG and literary/devices and figures, over verses 142-146, EXPAND your existing WIKI essays. Don't be self-critical!

fri 4/13 (G one hour) Work on essay writing (fixing on a hypothetical essay question, collecting evidence from Pyramus and Thisbe 71f). See Wiki "Essays" for the precise wording of the question.

Assign: review Pyramus and Thisbe translations from the beginning. Prepare your assignment TWICE, that is, translate it the first time to look up vocabulary and to analyze the grammar and then RE-TRANSLATE/REREAD it again to see if you get the meaning. This practice is imperative if you are to develop your translation/reading skills and to understand Ovid's style, syntax, and content.

mon 4/16 (A) In class: write up the evidence gathered from our essay question on Pyramus's death into something with normal sentence format. Support every single statement made with a citation (line number). Save to the Wiki. Also, see the Wiki for the spring Test I format.

Assign: take 45 minutes to answer the grammar questions over "Pyramus and Thisbe" 55-166.

Think about the following essay topic for tomorrow's class: "How does Ovid's manipulation of verb tenses enliven the narrative in 280-289?" This is a strictly grammar question out of SWIMTAG, and represents the kind of possible approach in which students are often not very well trained--through no fault of their own.
