III. Important Information
A. Tests: There will be four tests during the course of the semester, and a comprehensive final exam. Consult your course schedule for the exact dates of each test. There are no make-up tests. If you need to be absent for an emergency reason, you must contact the instructor for permission.
B. Quizzes: There will be four major quizzes. Consult your course schedule for the exact date of each one. If for any reason you miss a quiz, you must make it up before the next exam. See me if this becomes necessary, but please try to avoid this problem.
C. Oral Final: At the end of the semester you will be tested on your pronunciation and speaking skills. The interview will be a conversation with the instructor using the vocabulary and grammar covered in class. You will get practice in class beforehand.
D. Attendance: You are expected to attend every class and be on time. In a foreign language class it is very important that you attend class consistently. Attendance is an important partof your class participation grade. (Obviously, if you are not here you can't participate in class activities.) You are responsible for all the material covered and assigned in class whether you are there or not.
E. Homework: You will have homework for every class. Written assignments include all the Workbook/Lab Manual exercises and any other exercises the instructor may assign. The Workbook/Lab Manual is carefully coordinated wlith the main text, so you will always be able to tell what sections you are to do. The answers to the Workbook/Lab Manual exercises are provided a the end of your workbook. You should complete the exercises, check and correct your work with the answer key and ask the instructor about anything that you don't understand.
You will need to study every day in order to keep up with the material in this class. Do not expect to learn all the material in class. You will need to do extensive preparation and practice on your own.
If you miss a class for any reason, it is your responsibility to find out what material was covered and what the assignment was.
F. Cassette Tapes: There is a series of cassette tapes which accompanies our Workbook/Lab Manual, and you are expected to use them for each lesson. The cassettes will help you learn the vocabulary and grammar, and will increase your listening comprehension skills. They are available for your use in the library (Learning Resource Center) in Bldg. 1000, second floor. If you bring your own 90-minute tape, you may have a copy made for your use at home. I will collect and check your workbook/lab manual on major test days.
G. Class participation: It is very important that you participate actively in class. This involves answering questions when you are called on, volunteering answers, and asking questions about anything you dont understand. To take full advantage of what this course offers, you must be prepared for, and take an active part in, every class.
H. Communication with the instructor: The best way to be in touch with me is by e-mail. My e-address is given on the front page of this syllabus. I will answer you as soon as I can. If you do not have access to e-mail, you may contact me at my home phone, also given above.
I also have a website for this class. Please note the address:
http://mail.sss.austin.tx.us/~rlewis/span-acc.html
(It is linked to the site. Just click on it and it should take you there.) Under the link to Fall, 2001 you will find a copy of this document, and also of the course calendar. Under the Practice link, I plan to post all or most of the explanatory pages and worksheets we will use in class, together with others that I produce or come across and think might be of value to you. Under Links I plan to post a few websites which have proven to be helpful for practice or review of Spanish grammar and vocabulary.
