Unit 7 Civil War and Reconstruction

This unit is a little different. You will do a group critique of the Presidential Vision poster on Lincoln that will count as a significant daily grade. You will use the first essay question in this activity. Much of this work will help you be prepared for question #2 as well. You will write an in-class essay on one of the other two questions that will count as a test grade. The question will be drawn in class. You may bring in one small index card with hand-written notes as an aid. Take notes on all readings using headings and margin terms as your guides.

Possible essay questions:

1. Should President Lincoln be defined as the “Great Emancipator,” the “white man’s President,” "Conservative Revolutionary,"or an “Enlightened Pragmatist”?

2. How and why did the meaning and scope of the U.S. Civil War change from one to restore the Union to a "new birth of freedom"?

3. Was Reconstruction a failure or the beginning of a civil rights revolution?
