Frequently Asked Questions

Network Registration:

Boarding students who wish to have their computers connected to the residential network must first complete the online Boarding Network Request. After this form has been submitted, it will be processed by a member of the technology staff. The turn-around time on requests will be dependent upon the accuracy & thoroughness of the student's responses to the questions within the Boarding Network Request. If for some reason a member of the technology staff is unable to complete the request (e.g. a student has password protected their computer), an email will be sent to the student's St. Stephen's email account detailing the installation problem.

Techsupport Request:

When a member of the technology staff performs the initial installation of a computer to the Boarding Network, the computer's successful connection to both the internet and the school's email server is verified. Beyond this point, the computer's proper functioning is the responsibility of the individual student. Students can submit questions to the technology staff regarding the functioning of their computers. If a student decides that the problem his/her computer is having is beyond their own ability to solve, the student can request hands-on support from a member of the technology staff.

Appropriate Use Policy for the Boarding Community:

There are two Appropriate Use Policies that provide general guidelines to students using the school's network. One of these policies is applicable to all students, both Boarding and Day; this is the General Appropriate Use Policy. There is also an additional policy that covers the use of technology within the Boarding community; this is the Boarding Appropriate Use Policy. Boarding students are expected to follow both of these policies when using technology on campus.

1. My computer was on the Boarding Network last year. Do I need to repeat the request process?
Yes. Network subscriptions do not carry over to new school years.

2. As a boarder, what access to St. Stephen's computers do I have outside of the school day?
The computers in the Becker Library are available to all boarding students during the library's regular hours of operation.

3. If I decide to bring a computer with me to St. Stephen's, what specifications does the computer need to meet?
The computer needs to support an Ethernet networking card (NIC). Besides the network card, any computer purchased in the last several years should have sufficient hardware.

4. My computer doesn't seem to be working properly, what can I do about it?
Check out the Trouble-Shooting form.

5. Can I purchase a computer or software through St. Stephen's?
Generally, no. The only technology related product sold through the school are ethernet cards.

6. What restrictions are placed upon my internet use within the boarding network?
All web access is content filtered. In addition, the network automatically shuts down in accord with the "lights-out" policy set by the Boarding Director. In general, only web and IM access is allowed. AOL and MSN are not allowed because the school is not capable of providing content filtering for these services. Peer to Peer file sharing services are not allowed due to the same content-filtering requirements as well as the excessive bandwidth shortages they produce.

7. My computer needs software reinstalled but I can't find my installation disks. Can I borrow a copy from the school?
No. The school can not provide students with any copyrighted software.

8. My computer was working before I took it home over vacation but now it's not. What happened?
A high probability is that upon returning home, the computer was reset by a user to utilize networking settings/adaptors that are different than the ones installed by the school. Verify in your computer's networking control panels that the ethernet adaptor is still present and the IP address is correct.
