Shelter 411

When people experience poverty, and do not have enough to live on, shelter is one of the concerns or needs that they have.  There are many issues within shelter.  I know you are wondering what these issues might be, but don’t worry, we will cover that in this article.  You will not be bored.  In this article we will answer the questions such as, what happens when the beds and homes of the shelter are full.  What happens when people come from out of town and need a place to live?  Why doesn’t the person on the side of the road who says he is homeless go to one of the shelters?  How do you get to become part of the organizations?  Lastly, how do the shelters choose who gets to sleep in the beds if there are more people than beds?  We will answer these questions throughout the paper.
The first question we are going to answer is what happens when the beds and homes of the shelter are full?  In some organizations, such as The Housing Authority of the City of Austin, people have to fill out an application to stay there, and will then be put on a waiting list.  Then, when there is a home available, they will be contacted, and get to stay there.  In other instances, organizations such as Foundation for the Homeless, you have to call to make an appointment to stay there.  Other places just take the first people who arrive.
The next question that we are going to answer is what happens when people come from out of town and need a place to live?  Just like everyone else, they can either call the shelter, or fill out an application to stay there.  They will be treated the exact same way as people who are not coming from out of town.
Another issue that might come up is why doesn’t the person on the side of the road who says he is homeless go to one of the shelters?  This question can be answered in many ways.  The person could be on a waiting list to get into the shelter, or be waiting for their appointment to stay at a shelter.
Lastly, how do the shelters choose who gets to sleep in the beds if there are more people than beds?  In some shelters, the first people who arrive are the people who get to stay in the shelter.  Also, people sign up to stay in the shelters in advance, and if they don’t sign up, they don’t get to stay in the shelter.
All of these questions are issues that occur when talking about poverty.  Although they may be difficult to answer, with research and reliable information from the organization itself, they can be answered.  These questions are the questions of our society, and the answers should be told to all homeless people.  This will make our society become more stable, and a better place to live in.
