FALL TERM: AUTHOR PAPERS
During the fall term, seniors embark on the intensive study of three novels by the author of their choice. In preparation for their own author papers, we begin the term with a reading of Ian McEwan's Atonement. Class discussions and a variety of analytical exercises are designed to model the process students will undergo when writing their first author paper: an in-depth analysis of one of their thee novels. The second author paper, a comparison of two of the three novels they have read over the summer, immediately follows. The term ends with a reading of two novels: David Mitchell's Black Swan Green and Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness. Together, the three assigned novels of the term will allow us to discuss a variety of themes including "Britishness," point-of-view, colonization, and the underdog.
